Art in the Shop

Today we are featuring another favorite piece from our shop, Allen Wynn's lovely Morning Song.

Morning Song

This delightful woman brings a wonderful presence to the shop, standing strong and tall, in conversation with her kindly bird.  

Wynn's pieces have a whimsy quality as well as the sense of strength and solace.

Below you can read a blurb from his statement about his choice of subjects and his unique material that he developed  in which he creates many of his pieces.

Allen Wynn’s tough, graceful sculptures represent the inner beings of working people that he has known throughout his life. They are usually women, sometimes accompanied by a child whose role is that of a clear-eyed observer. Occasionally he will add a bird or a fish, not as an overt symbol but as a simple evocation of rural existence. The figures are reserved yet accessible.

Allen Wynn has developed a unique process which incorporates wooden frameworks, paper pulp from natural and recycled materials mixed with sawdust, resin, and sand from the nearby Red River. He applies thin layers of this substance to the armature, adding and subtracting and modeling until the contours and the texture are right. In the final step, Allen applies multiple coats of paints as well as resin to give each piece a unique patina and as well as a protective seal.

Art in the Shop ~

Today we are featuring a few of the jewels that Debra Corbett delivered last week.  Make sure to visit our shop to see all of her treasures that we have on our walls.

Debra has a background as a plein-air landscape which informs this body of abstract paintings.

She creates these intricate surfaces with either plaster or modeling paste, which she then uses a myriad of tools, such as palette knives, brushed, sticks and even her hands, to create marks and lines.  She then paints over this surface with stunning combinations of colors. They are truly lovely pieces.

Art in the Shop

Although today, it is raining and cold outside, it has been bright and shining in the shop.  We are thrilled that one of shop artists stopped by with new work.  Make sure to come by to see the beautiful new paintings by Debra Corbett.

And for today's Art in the Shop we are featuring this precious painting of clouds by Jamie Kirkland. This painting is 10x10, small but just a gem, bringing blue skies into any room or day!

Here is a little from Jamie's artist's statement:

My work is about creating a feeling of deep calm, soft stillness, expansive space and tranquility, a sense of equanimity, a secret to take rest.

My studio in Santa Fe looks out to the Sangre de Christo Mountains; recently I have been exploring the shapes of clouds in all of their many moods, bathed in rose reflected sunset light as well as the lavenders and deep blues of dusk

Art in the Shop

Today's Art in the Shop is Barcelona Tangerine by Michael Hoffman. 

This piece is mixed media on a 36 x 36 panel.  With its fiery oranges and spirited lines, this work captures the intensity of the current heat wave that the Boston area is experiencing.

Hoffman sees his works as meditative studies done with rich color and bold graphic compositions, often incorporate circles, grids, and stripes.

Art in the Shop

In honor of the upcoming long weekend, 

today we are featuring 

Linda Cordner's peaceful encaustic painting, Treeline.

Cordner has created a beautiful vista, 

this could be the view from 

a blanket at a Memorial Day picnic.

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.  Here is what Cordner says about working in wax:

"I am very drawn to wax and its tactile qualities, the smell and viscosity of the medium are very different from other painting techniques. Creating organic forms is a natural extension of wax’s origin."

Emily Passman,  to the collection of artists that we represent in the shop.
